This past weekend I checked off a major "to-do" on my bucket list while in Blacksburg: hike the triple crown (three ridge peaks: Tinker Cliffs, McAfee's Knob and Dragon's Tooth) on the Appalachian Trail! There is a loop and non-loop version, and being a novice backpacker I opted for the non-loop. It was still a 24 mile hike over the course of 2 days and one night, with almost 5,000ft of elevation gain. It was challenging physically, but mentally relaxing: I only had to worry about where to get water and where shelter was located. Not once did my overwhelming 'to-do by Monday' list cross my mind. It was a weekend well spent (even if I was immobilized on the couch the day after!)

I am happy to announce that I have been selected as a Fralin Undergraduate Research Fellow for the 2018-2019 academic school year. As a fellow, I am given the opportunity to conduct my own research, supervised by Dr. Erin Hotchkiss, meet with Dr. Dennis Dean, director of the Fralin Life Science Institute, and present my findings at the Dennis Dean Undergraduate Research and Creative Scholarship Conference, on April 19th, 2019. The title of my research project is "Identifying unknowns in the global carbon budget: quantification of water column methane production in oxic streams".
This summer I am at the University of Florida working with AJ Reisinger on ciprofloxacin exposure to stream biofilms, thanks to the SURF Program. The sites along Sweetwater Branch here in Gainesville, FL have been chosen and tiles deployed this Friday, June 8th. Follow AJ or myself on twitter to see what we are up to this summer.
This year I attended my first conference: Society for Freshwater Science (SFS) Annual Meeting! It was held in Detroit, Michigan for four days. I would like to thank my funding sources that enabled me to attend this conference: SFS SRC, VT CSES and the Hotchkiss Lab. I was able to present a poster on my research that I conducted during summer 2017, attend many many talks, meet new friends, re-unite with my HotchkissARMY(!!), and parler francais! As always, I am so very grateful to be a part of such a helpful and supportive community. With that, I'm looking forward to AGU in December! The Virginia Tech Department of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences recently awarded me with The Dr. Samuel S. Obenshain Experiential Learning Award, which is given to a student in the department each year to use towards travel to a professional conference or competition. In return, I will be presenting my poster to the department during the Fall 2018 at a departmental meeting!
I was selected to receive a 2018 travel award from the Society of Freshwater Science (SFS). I will be traveling to Detroit in late May and will present the results of my research project, "Dynamic heterogeneity of greenhouse gases in streams", at the annual SFS conference.
